2008 Tanadoona Shirt Design Selected2008 Tanadoona shirt

Each Tanadoona camper will receive a fabulous shirt with the design shown at left, commemorating the upcoming season.

We hope you enjoy the design as much as we do. The bold tree featured in the design signifies the great outdoors and forests of Tanadoona. While the spattering of paint evokes our playful nature and the arts and crafts, which are a key element of the Tanadoona experience.

Shirts may be picked up at Tanadoona during our open house (see article above). If you are unable to attend, don't fret, you will receive your shirt in the mail after April 19, 2008.

Tanadoona History:

The Camp Fire Pole

Tanadoona's "totem pole" Gracing the entrance to Tasiago Dining Hall at Tanadoona is a Camp Fire version of a "totem pole," which displays an intriguing array of animal carvings. The pole is designed to symbolize the values proclaimed within the original Law or Desire of Camp Fire as well as the various skills youth develop within our programs.

  • At the top is a wolf who represents Frontiers.
  • Next, the eagle embodies the desire to Be Trustworthy.
  • The beaver exemplifies our desire to Glorify Work and Give Service.
  • Under him is an interesting green character with red eyes; this is a fish who represents sports & games and reminds us to Hold onto Health
  • The white rabbit is Creative Arts
  • Finally, the wise owl at the base signifies Nature and our desire to Pursue Knowledge.

Two girls carve the pole in 1960.This pole has been a part of the Tanadoona landscape for nearly 50 years, since a group of local Camp Fire leaders and youth organized to create the artwork as an expression of their dedication to the program. They nurtured the project along with care and consideration to the concepts and design. Several youth then set about carving the images into the pole using chisels and hammers. Five months of hard work paid off when the final artwork was unveiled during a special dedication on October 1, 1961.

The inspiration for the project came from the totem pole tradition which originated among the Native people of the Northwest Pacific coast. Camp Fire was founded with an appreciation of many Native American traditions. Our founders believed that native cultures expressed an admirable respect for the crucial transition between childhood into adulthood through which every person passes. It is important to note that the Tanadoona Pole is not intended to be a replica of an authentic totem pole, which takes many years of study and a deep, intimate knowledge of a tribal culture to produce. The website, Native Online has more information about authentic totem poles.
